Ham Steak with Apple Chutney
Instructions:
This freshly made, sweet-and-tangy chutney is perfect with ham steak, but you can also serve it with grilled pork or chicken. 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1 medium onion, chopped 2 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and chopped 1 teaspoon minced, peeled fresh ginger 3â„4 cup apple juice 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1â„4 cup golden raisins 1â„2 teaspoon freshly grated orange peel 1â„4 teaspoon salt 1 fully cooked smoked-ham center slice, 1 inch thick (2 pounds)

- In nonreactive 2-quart saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes. Stir in apples and ginger and cook 3 minutes longer. Stir in apple juice, vinegar, raisins, orange peel, and salt; heat to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes. (Makes 22â„3 cups chutney.)
- Meanwhile, heat 10-inch skillet over medium heat until very hot. Add ham steak and cook until heated through and lightly browned, 8 to 10 minutes per side. Serve with chutney.
