Blackberry and oatmeal breakfast brulee

  Ingredients:
  • 4 cups freshly cooked oatmeal;
  • 1⁄2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts, toasted;
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract;
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon;
  • 2 cups fresh blackberries;
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar;
  • 1 cup sour cream, at room temperature;
  • 1⁄2 cup light brown sugar.

How to make
Blackberry and oatmeal breakfast brulee
    Preheat the broiler.
  • Cook the oatmeal according to package directions. When it is ready, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the walnuts, vanilla, and cinnamon. Divide the oatmeal among 4 shallow gratin dishes or heatproof bowls and top with the berries.
  • Stir together the granulated sugar and sour cream in a small bowl and spread evenly over the berries. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top.
  • Place the dishes on a rimmed baking sheet. Broil until the brown sugar caramelizes and forms a crisp shell, about 3 minutes. Serve at once, keeping in mind that the dishes are extremely hot.
  • What else works? You can replace the blackberries with fresh figs, stems removed and cut into halves or quarters, depending on their size.
