Savory spiced pear and apple sauce
Instructions:
- Stir together the pears, apples, cider, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and mustard in a large saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, cover the pan, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the fruit is soft, about 15 minutes. If the fruit gets dry, add a bit more cider.
- Coarsely mash the fruit directly in the pot with a hand-held potato masher or the side of a large spoon. Stir in the butter and thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Check the seasoning; the spices should be subtle but perceptible. Serve warm or at room temperature.
- What else works? You can use all pears or all apples.
